In May 1853, an unfounded police raid led business men to protest. 1000 people joined the protest against what one speaker described as a brutal, corrupt police state, with a system of paid informers leading police to supposed unlicenced diggers or sly grog sellers.

The situation was quickly defused by fair and just decisions.

Further meetings that year were smaller and were aligned with the Bendigo Petition.
